Student-Friendly Energy Savers Under £30

Student budgets are tight and every gadget has to earn its place. The good news: the cheapest energy-savers are also the most effective. You don't need a smart home — you need three or four small things that quietly shave money off a bill you're probably splitting anyway.

• LED smart bulbs (~£10) — up to 85% less energy than old bulbs, and you can dim or schedule them from your phone. Perfect for a desk lamp or bedside light.
• Basic timer / smart plugs (~£15) — kill standby on your TV, monitor and chargers. One plug saves roughly £30 a year.
• Draught-proofing gadgets (£5–£15) — self-adhesive door and window strips stop you paying to heat the street. No tools, no mess.
• Radiator reflector panels (~£10) — bounce heat back into the room instead of into the wall.

In a student house the bills are usually pooled, so saving energy is a team sport. A few smart plugs and a shared schedule make it fair and painless.

• Split the cost of communal kit. One smart plug on the shared TV or the kitchen kettle costs a few quid each and saves the whole house.
• Schedule communal areas. Set hallway and kitchen smart bulbs to dim late at night so nobody leaves them blazing till 3am.
• Agree a “last one out” routine. A single tap in the app can switch off shared plugs when everyone's at lectures.
• Keep your own kit tagged. Your bulbs and plugs come with you at the end of the year — label them so there's no mix-up on moving day.

Gadgets only go so far — if you're genuinely struggling with bills, there is real support out there. It's worth checking what you're entitled to:

• Your university hardship / support fund. Most UK unis have one for students facing unexpected costs, including energy bills. Ask the student services or welfare team.
• Your energy supplier's hardship scheme. Suppliers offer payment plans and, in some cases, grants — contact them early if you're behind.
• Citizens Advice. Free, independent guidance on bills, tariffs and any grants you may qualify for.
• Check your tariff. If bills are in your name, make sure you're not on an expensive default rate — switching can beat any gadget saving.
